What’s a Urologist

As a urologist, I often hear this question—and many people think I’ve said “neurologist” instead! Urology is one of the smaller surgical specialties, and few realize the wide range of conditions we treat.

From kidney stones to prostate surgery, from bladder cancer to incontinence, urologists play a vital role in helping patients improve their quality of life. According to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons 2022 Activity Report, there are only 483 active urologists in Australia—a small but essential specialty.

To help shed light on what urologists (or urological surgeons) do, I’ve created a 90-second short film titled “What’s a Urologist?” using AI tools. These technologies made it possible to produce the film without the usual resources required for traditional filmmaking.

This film covers many, but not all, conditions treated by urologists. Additionally, not all urologists treat every one of these conditions, as some focus on specialized areas of practice.
